Day 2
BUCHAREST - SINAIA - BRAȘOV (approx. 3h30min drive)
The settlement of Bucharest was first mentioned in 1459, and ever since, the town has undergone a series of continuous changes, representing the central scene of Romania’s political, artistic, university, financial, and cultural life. Between the two world wars, due to its elegant architecture and the elite living in Bucharest, the city was nicknamed “The Little Paris”.
After breakfast, your tour guide will pick you up from your hotel, and you will enjoy a panoramic tour of Bucharest. You will drive by the famous Palace of the Parliament, the Revolution Square, the Arc of Triumph, and Bucharest’s old town.
Then, you will leave Romania’s capital city behind and head North, to Transylvania. You will visit the country’s most beautiful castle, Peleș Castle*, on the way. This place represents the former summer royal residence of the Romanian royal family. It was inaugurated in 1883 and extended until 1914. It was one of the most modern castles at the time. Electricity, central heating system, central vacuum cleaner, telephone, elevator, these are just a few of the facilities that Peleș Castle was equipped with. Built in a German Neo-Renaissance style and located in an idyllic environment, surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, the castle boasts one of the richest wooden interior designs. It still has the original furniture. You will be overwhelmed by the Hall of Honor, King Carol’s weapon collection, or the Music Hall. At the end of the visit, you will also spend some time in the Royal Gardens.
Before dinner, you will arrive at the final destination of the day: the medieval city of Brașov. You will enjoy a short walking tour of the old town, where you can see the Council Square, the Council Tower, Rope Street, the fortification walls, and the Black Church, a symbolic building of the city. Known also as “Kronnstadt”, Brașov was founded in the 13th century by the Saxons and developed, throughout the centuries, as an important trade city at the crossroads between the Orient and the Occident. Now, it is one of the most beautiful and visited cities in Romania, situated in a perfect position next to the Carpathian Mountains and the main travel destinations of Romania, such as Bran Castle, Sighișoara medieval citadel, Sibiu, the Transylvanian fortified churches, and many others.
Day 3
BRAȘOV - BRAN - PREJMER - BRAȘOV (approx. 2h30min drive)
After breakfast, you will depart for Bran Castle. On the way, you’ll take a detour to the Zărnești Gorge. A spectacular limestone canyon, it offers one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Carpathians. The narrow passage, with cliffs rising over 200 meters high, follows a gentle trail along a stream — perfect for hiking, photography, or simply enjoying the silence of nature. The gorge is also home to rare flora and fauna, including chamois and eagles.
Then, you will visit the famous Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s castle. It was a fortified castle for the trade route that connected Transylvania and Wallachia. The people of Brașov built it between 1377 and 1378. It represents in the consciousness of any tourist the dark residence of Prince Dracula, a fictional hero in the famous novel written by the British author Bram Stoker. In reality, Bran Castle is connected to Queen Marie of Romania. Her story is equally interesting to that of Dracula, if not more interesting.
After lunch, you will depart for Prejmer Fortified Church – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortified church of Prejmer (Tartlau) is one of the best-preserved medieval defensive churches in Transylvania. Built by the Teutonic Knights in the early 13th century and later expanded by the Saxons, it features massive, thick walls, a deep moat, and over 270 storage rooms that villagers once used during sieges. Inside, you’ll find a beautifully restored Gothic church with painted altars and an impressive organ. A walk through its concentric corridors and tiny chambers offers a vivid glimpse into medieval Saxon life and defense strategies.
The rest of the day is at your leisure in Brașov.
Overnight in Brașov: at a 3 or 4-star hotel
Day 4
BRAȘOV – VISCRI – SIGHIȘOARA – SIBIU (2h drive)
It’s time to discover the forgotten world of the former Saxon villages. On the way to Sighișoara, we’ll make a detour to the remote village of Viscri, a great UNESCO site. There are just 2 or 3 dirt roads in Viscri, the main one being quite wide. This road is lined on both sides with beautiful and traditional houses built in the Saxon style. At the village's outskirts, perched on a hill, there is the fortified church of Viscri, one of the oldest fortified churches in Transylvania. You will visit the church and the small museum located at the entrance.
The tour of Eastern Europe continues with Sighișoara, another UNESCO site in Transylvania. Founded by the Germans about 800 years ago, the medieval citadel of Sighișoara retains its picture-perfect appearance to this day. It is the best-preserved citadel in Romania, a stunning combination of cobblestone streets, medieval walls, massive watchtowers, and old architecture. The highlights of Sighișoara are the House of Vlad Dracul, known as Dracula's birthplace, the Clock Tower – the symbol of Sighișoara, the Covered Staircase, and the Church on the Hill, one of the oldest buildings in the citadel.
In the afternoon, you’ll arrive in Sibiu, the former European Capital of Culture in 2007, where you will have time at leisure for the rest of the day.
Overnight in Sibiu: 4-star hotel centrally located
Day 5
SIBIU – ALBA IULIA – CLUJ NAPOCA (approx. 2h45min drive)
In the morning, you’ll enjoy a walking tour of Sibiu. Hermannstadt, using its German name, was founded by the Saxon colonists about 800 years ago. In a short time, Sibiu became one of the most important cities of Transylvania. Sibiu boasts several medieval squares, including the Great Square (Piata Mare), which is the largest in Romania. Old houses surround it, impressive palaces such as the Brukenthal Palace, and religious buildings, including the Catholic Cathedral.
The tour of Sibiu continues with the other squares, the oldest cobblestone streets, and you’ll find out more about the legend that surrounds the Bridge of Lies. The tour of Sibiu concludes with the Evangelical Cathedral and the former medieval towers.
In the afternoon, you’ll get to see the biggest and best-preserved Vauban-like citadel in Romania. Built at the beginning of the 18th century, Alba Iulia's citadel has been recently restored to its former glory. Besides the two cathedrals, the Orthodox and the Catholic, you’ll be shown the citadel's intricate gates, the 3rd gate being the most impressive. The old Roman castrum and the medieval citadel known as Balgrad are now integrated into the Austrian citadel. Their ruins are part of the tour.
In the evening, you will arrive in Cluj-Napoca, one of Romania's oldest cities.
Overnight in Cluj-Napoca: 4-star hotel
Day 6
CLUJ-NAPOCA – MARAMUREȘ (4h drive)
Today, you will leave Transylvania behind and head to Maramures, a stunning mountain region renowned for its rural landscape and wooden churches.
You will head first to the village of Șurdești, where you will see the first wooden church of this trip. This UNESCO site showcases the purity of the locals’ faith, their outstanding talent for building wooden constructions, and a great level of traditional simplicity.
Maramureș boasts some of the best-preserved villages in Europe. It’s time to explore one of them. You’ll enjoy a walking tour in one of these villages. You’ll observe the locals, their way of living, houses, and their traditions.
Carry on to Săpânța village, where you will admire the famous Merry Cemetery. It has gained originality and value through the chopped, carved, and painted crosses on which the artisan has chiseled out versified epitaphs, most of them full of a remarkable sense of humor, particular to the area and all Romanians. The value of these works of art is recognized both domestically and internationally.
In the evening, you’ll arrive at your final destination, a traditional guest house located near Sighetu Marmatiei. Here, you’ll taste a great traditional home-made dinner.
Overnight in Maramureș: traditional guest house
Day 7
MARAMUREȘ – SATU MARE (RO) – TOKAJ REGION (HU) – EGER (approx. 5h drive)
Today, the journey is long but impressive. You will leave Romania and cross into Hungary, the second country of this Eastern European Tour.
Admire the countryside and stop in the Tokaj Wine region to visit an old wine cellar. Enjoy a wine tasting session and discover why Tokaj wine is considered one of the world's best white wines. The story says that, delighted with the drink, Louis XV of France offered a glass of Tokaj wine to Madame de Pompadour, referring to it as “The Wine of Kings, The King of Wines.”
In the evening, arrival in the city of Eger, known as the Baroque Pearl of Hungary.
Overnight in Eger: 3-star hotel
Day 8
EGER – BUDAPEST (2h drive)
In the morning, you will enjoy a walking tour of the picturesque town of Eger, the second largest one in Northern Hungary.
With over 1000 years of history, Eger owes its fame to the beautiful and imposing buildings designed in Baroque architectural style, the winemaking culture, and the religious institutions. Saint Stephen, the first Christian king of Hungary, founded a bishopric in Eger at the beginning of the 11th century.
You will start the walk from the Main Square of Eger, called Dobo Ter, after the brave captain, Istvan Dobo, who managed to defend the city fortress and Northern Hungary in 1552 against the expansion of the Turkish Empire. An interesting legend is related to this episode, and for sure, you will find it out during the tour. You will see Istvan Dobo’s statue in the square and visit the elegant Minority Church. Continue to roam on the Baroque streets and reach the medieval Eger citadel, a city symbol. Perched on a hill and overlooking the city, Eger citadel was the set of many battles between the Hungarians and the Ottomans. On your way down, you will pass by a Minaret, which is the Northernmost Ottoman minaret in Europe, and then head to the impressive Eger Basilica.
After lunch, head to your final destination: Budapest.
Time at leisure in the afternoon.
Overnight in Budapest: 4-star hotel
